About the Event
Voyages to the Bottom of the Sea: Exploring the Deep Ocean in a 3-Person Submersible:
What is it like to travel 3 miles below the sea surface to study deep seafloor creatures and the environments they live in?Â
Join CSUB marine scientist and oceanographer Dr. Tony Rathburn as he journeys to the seafloor in various locations to explore previously unmapped areas of the globe and study the strange creatures that live there. Discover areas of the planet that have never been seen before or since and meet creatures that thrive in these perpetually cold, dark habitats, including 10-foot-long worms with no mouth, no anus and no gut, and fuzzy white yeti crabs that dance to keep bacteria happy.Â
Dr. Rathburn is currently a Professor in the CSUB Department of Geological Sciences, and routinely takes students on research voyages to study the biology, geology and biogeochemistry of the deep seafloor. His research is relevant to marine biodiversity, climate change and the history of environmental change in ancient oceans.
