Adaptations: How to Survive in a Changing World
Thursday, April 20th
5:30p - 6:30p
Dr. Amber Stokes is a Chemical Ecologist working to better understand the rough-skinned newt and its adaptations that help protect it from predators. Most of us learn that organisms adapt to their environments. But, how do those adaptations actually happen, and what are the results? Adaptations can vary from organisms taking advantage of new food sources, to changes to the physiology of an organism to deal with a changing climate. Regardless of how extreme or simple the adaptation is, the process is the same. Come learn about the process of adaptation in an ever changing world.
Amber Stokes is currently an Associate Professor in the Biology Department at California State University, Bakersfield. She grew up here in Bakersfield from age seven and attended CSUB as an undergraduate earning her BS in Biology. She then earned her MS and PhD from Utah State University, studying newts and their toxins under Dr. Edmund D. Brodie, Jr. After completing her degree she started at CSUB as an assistant professor in the Biology Department. She currently does research in addition to teaching physiology, ecology, and zoology courses.
