About the Event

GEOLOGY OF THE GRAND CANYON

May 14, 2022

3:00 PM - 4:30 PM

With geologist Tim Elam

Perhaps no place in the world can inspire more superlatives than the Grand Canyon of the Colorado River. Awesome and colorful, beautiful and immense, this 277 mile long canyon has drawn Native Americans, explorers, military surveyors, tourists, artists, geologists, fortune-hunters, and adventure seekers for centuries.

The colorful cliffs of the Grand Canyon…one of the Seven Natural Wonders of the World, contain a record of Earth history duplicated nowhere else. Yet, controversy abounded around Grand Canyon, leading Army lieutenant Joseph Christmas Ives to say in 1858 “The region… is of course altogether valueless….after entering it, there is nothing to do but leave.”

How, when, and why did it form? What makes it unique…different from other large canyons of the world? New insights show there is much still to be learned about the formation of the canyon, as well as fauna, flora, and water.

Join former Grand Canyon Park Ranger Tim Elam as he takes you on a rich photographic tour of the geology of the Grand Canyon. After the presentation, he will answer questions about being a Park Ranger…or other questions you have about the canyon.

The presentation will be informal, and no geologic background is necessary to enjoy the event. There will be no extra charge for attending this event…just the normal Museum entrance fee.
