Tim Elam: LIFE ON THE EDGE: Kern County Earthquakes and Plate Tectonics
Join geologist Tim Elam to learn why stresses occur on faults in Kern and nearby counties and a review of significant earthquakes felt in Kern County, including the 1857 Fort Tejon earthquake, 1952 Bakersfield/Tehachapi earthquakes, and 2019 Mojave Desert (Ridgecrest) earthquakes.

About the Event
LIFE ON THE EDGE: KERN COUNTY EARTHQUAKES AND PLATE TECTONICS
November 5, 2022
1:30 PM
The San Andreas Fault is perhaps the most studied geologic feature in the United States. This break in the Earth’s crust is located where plates of the crust are locked against each other. But the San Andreas Fault is only one of several faults in and near Kern County at risk of rupture. Powerful earthquakes over the last 70 years have occurred on other California faults.
Join local geologist Tim Elam as he presents:
- A basic understanding of earthquakes and plate tectonics
- Why stresses occur on faults in Kern and nearby counties
- Ongoing concern about potential rupture along the San Andreas Fault
- A review of significant earthquakes felt in Kern County, including the 1857 Fort Tejon earthquake, 1952 Bakersfield/Tehachapi earthquakes, and 2019 Mojave Desert (Ridgecrest) earthquakes
- Photographic views of Kern County faults
The presentation will be informal, and questions and discussion are encouraged. No geologic background is necessary to enjoy the event.
There will be no extra charge to attend this event…just the normal museum admittance fee. November 5th is also Family Day at the museum!
